WHY ZONING MATTERS
Thoughtful zoning allows children to transition naturally between learning, imaginative play, quiet time, and social interaction. Clear activity zones help reduce overwhelm, encourage independence, and create calmer, more functional preschool environments that support a wide range of sensory and emotional needs.
Creative and sensory-aware preschool and play spaces thoughtfully designed to support learning, movement, imaginative play, emotional regulation, and child development.
At Little Functional Spaces, we create functional and neurodiverse-friendly environments for homes, schools, therapy spaces, and educational settings. Through thoughtful zoning, calming design elements, functional storage solutions, and sensory-aware planning, we design spaces that encourage creativity, focus, independence, and emotional well-being.
Our Preschool & Play Space Designs May Include:
• Sensory-friendly classrooms
• Calm corners and regulation spaces
• Imaginative play areas
• Functional storage solutions
• Reading and learning zones
• Outdoor play environments
• Preschool zoning and layout planning
• Neurodiverse-friendly learning spaces
• Shared play environments
Every environment is thoughtfully tailored to the unique needs, routines, and sensory preferences of the children using the space, creating supportive spaces that feel calm, engaging, and functional.
This revamp was inspired by the need to create a play space that could be comfortably used throughout every season. During summer, the aftercare area lacked sufficient shade and became hot and exposed, while winter offered very little sheltered space for indoor-style play.
The redesigned space now adapts to both conditions — opening up to allow natural airflow and shaded comfort during warmer months, while closing in to create a cozy, protected environment for play and connection on colder winter days.
Little Functional Spaces designs sensory-aware preschool interiors, calming playrooms, and functional learning environments for homes, schools, and educational spaces throughout Cape Town, South Africa, and beyond.
